An affordable housing project for 2SLGBTQ+ seniors has reached a critical milestone, securing nearly $9 million in provincial funding and city land to build a safe, inclusive residence in Edmonton.

The Edmonton Pride Seniors Group and Right at Home Housing Society now have the green light to develop approximately 64 units with a mix of market- and non-market-rate options at 95 Street north of Rowland Road in The Quarters. The City of Edmonton provided the land for $1 in late 2025; the Alberta government approved $8.69 million in May.

Marisa Redmond, executive director of Right at Home, said the project could begin construction next summer, though timelines in affordable housing are rarely straightforward. "There are so many different components that can play into it—the finding of the land, the finding of partners, the funding environment," she said. The seniors group has dreamed of this development since 2013.

Right at Home is launching a capital campaign to raise $5 million toward the estimated $27 million total cost; public funding and loans are expected to cover the balance. The project is crucial because Edmonton lost its only queer-friendly seniors' facility when The Ashbourne closed in 2023. "We didn't see very much, looking ahead, that addressed persons who were part of our community," said Michael Phair, chair of the Edmonton Pride Seniors Group.
