Scott Roberts, Global Edmonton's six o'clock news anchor, has been let go as part of sweeping layoffs at Corus Entertainment, the parent company of Global News.
Roberts announced the news Thursday on social media, saying the company is making significant cuts to local news. "Sad to say but I won't be reporting the evening news on Global any longer," he wrote. "Thank you to everyone who invited me into their homes over the past four years. This truly is an incredible city that immediately made me feel part of the community again."
Roberts replaced veteran anchor Gord Steinke, who retired in August 2022.
Union Unifor confirmed 43 of its members were cut across the country. An estimated 28 positions are eliminated in Alberta, including at least an Edmonton-based editor, a weather anchor, and three control room roles.
Corus says the changes are part of a broader push to "centralize aspects of its control room operations." The company says it will continue producing local news content in Calgary and Edmonton studios while adding undisclosed new roles to support local news delivery.
The layoffs come as Corus grapples with steep declines in radio and television advertising revenue. In 2024, the company shut down 880 Edmonton radio station. In December, it eliminated its news traffic helicopters from Calgary and Edmonton.
