Telus World of Science Edmonton will remain closed until approximately November, the organization announced Wednesday, after sustaining significant flooding damage from Friday's severe storm.

Affected areas of the building are being treated as having Category 3 water contamination, requiring extensive cleanup and replacement of flooring, drywall, cabinetry, and other building components. The closure will stretch at least four months.

The organization has temporarily laid off a "significant" portion of its workforce as a result. "This is the most difficult decision we have faced during an already devastating week," President and CEO Constance Scarlett said. Employees were informed before the decision was made public, and the organization is working with Civic Service Union 52 on the temporary layoff process and eventual recall.

All active memberships will be automatically paused during the closure and extended by the full duration. Members who prefer not to extend may request a prorated refund. Refunds for affected camps, programs, IMAX screenings, events, and bookings scheduled through the end of September will be automatically processed to the original method of payment.

The organization said it is exploring opportunities for a safe partial reopening earlier in the fall if possible, though this closure remains a current planning estimate rather than a confirmed date.
