Two Edmonton junior high students are facing child sexual exploitation charges for allegedly using AI software to generate sexualized images of classmates.
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) announced the charges Wednesday against the pair of 14-year-olds. The two are charged with voyeurism as well as making and possessing child sexual exploitation material.
Investigators said photos of "several" female students were taken without their consent, then loaded into AI software along with images from the girls' social media profiles. A teacher brought the case to police attention in March after complaints from students. The two teens were charged June 1 and cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
ALERT, the Edmonton Police Service Child Protection Section, and the Zebra Centre provided information at a Wednesday press conference.
This is the second time ALERT has investigated a case of AI being used to create child sexual exploitation materials in a school. In December, a high school student in Calgary was charged for creating such images of "numerous" young girls at area schools.
