Veterans' House Edmonton: $16.1M supportive housing project for homeless vets opens

A supportive housing project for homeless veterans is coming to Edmonton, addressing a gap in services for a population that makes up 7% of Alberta's homeless despite representing 1% of the province's population.

Veterans' House Canada Edmonton will provide 40 fully accessible suites in a three-storey apartment building with on-site services and community amenities. The project is funded through federal, municipal, and private contributions.

Rent will be capped around $900 monthly, with a subsidy model ensuring no tenant pays more than 30% of their income—meaning someone collecting $1,500 per month pays a maximum $500. A handful of veterans' support groups provide rent subsidies. The building features modern efficiency standards including individual heat pumps in each suite, thick walls to reduce utility costs, and amenities including a pet-friendly policy, a section for people with allergies, a meditation garden, dog park, and covered patio.

The facility will operate alongside Civida, which specializes in affordable housing. On-site services include classes in cooking and financial literacy, with mental health support a core component. Trevor Friesen, operations manager, said many Veterans' House clients self-medicated with alcohol or other substances to ease trauma, which "exacerbated their problems further until they ended up homeless." Many returned to civilian life before PTSD was taken seriously; deployment locations affecting clients include the Balkans, Somalia, and Rwanda.

The Ottawa facility, which has operated for five years, houses clients with an average age between 60 and 70. The organization estimates upwards of 5,000 veterans are combating homelessness across Canada. A dedicated federal unit was recently established to help soldiers access post-military life supports, representing a shift in how the country addresses veteran mental health.
