Edmonton Police Service issued a warning Thursday about Denzel Dre Colton Bird, 30, of Lethbridge, who will reside in Edmonton after his release from prison and poses "a significant risk of harm to members of the community," according to the force's assessment.
Bird was convicted in June 2018 of aggravated sexual assault for a 2016 attack on a 25-year-old woman in Lethbridge. The victim was struck with a weapon, dragged into an alley, and sexually assaulted. She spent four months recovering in a Calgary hospital. Bird was 20 years old at the time of the assault.
Bird is subject to a court order with conditions supervised by Correctional Service Canada, which required an approved residence as a condition of release. His conditions include a daily curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless he has written approval from his parole supervisor. He is prohibited from consuming or possessing alcohol or drugs except prescribed and over-the-counter medication. Bird must report all relationships and friendships with females to his supervisor and is forbidden from associating with anyone involved in "criminal activity, gangs and/or the substance abuse subculture."
The Edmonton Police Service said it issued this warning "after careful deliberation of related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform members of the community."
Members of the public with information about Bird are urged to contact the EPS tip line at 780-423-4567. The exact date of release and Bird's specific Edmonton address and neighbourhood have not been disclosed. The investigation remains ongoing.
