Claude Bégin is stepping back from the lead role in the upcoming comédie musicale Grease, citing family reasons for his withdrawal. Philippe Scrive will take over as Danny Zuko for the production, which opens at Espace St-Denis in Montreal on December 11.
Bégin announced the decision on social media, describing his motivation as "une réalité plus éprouvante à la maison" — a more challenging reality at home. Eric Young, president of Groupe Entourage, which is producing Grease, said in a statement: "We welcome Claude's decision with empathy and offer him our support. Philippe has very quickly grasped the role and we look forward to the public, who know him mainly through his television roles, discovering the multiple facets of his talent and his immense charisma."
The production is directed by Alexis Pitkevicht. Alongside Scrive, the cast includes Éléonore Lagacé and Claudia Bouvette alternating as Sandy and Rizzo, Mathieu-Philippe Perras as Kenickie, Alice Déry as Frenchy, Julie Ringuette as Miss Lynch, and Joël Legendre as Johnny Casino and Teen Angel.
Grease will run at Espace St-Denis from December 11 through January 3. The production will then move to Théâtre du Casino Lac-Leamy in Gatineau (July 8–18, 2027) and salle Albert-Rousseau in Quebec City (August 5–21, 2027).
