Marilyn Brooks, a celebrated Canadian fashion designer who popularized mod-style clothing across North America, died Saturday of natural causes at the age of 93.

Brooks opened The Unicorn boutique in Toronto in the 1960s, becoming one of the first shops in the city to sell the slick, colourful, and polished mod-style clothing that was popular among rebellious British youths and The Beatles. The boutique became a hip destination for teens seeking the latest fashions.

In 1970, she closed The Unicorn and launched a chain of retail stores across Canada and the United States called Marilyn Brooks Boutiques. She received the Order of Canada in 2022 for her contributions to Canada's fashion and retail landscape. In 1988, the City of Toronto declared February 4 Marilyn Brooks Day to honour her legacy.
