Humorist Mibenson Sylvain balances writing and performing across Quebec stages

Mibenson Sylvain is living a compressed comedy life these days — rehearsing his debut solo show, opening for Jo Cormier, and preparing for his Juste pour rire slot, all while fitting writing sessions into café downtime across Quebec.

The Terrebonne-born comedian won Juste pour rire's revelation award in 2021 and took home humorist of the year at the Gala Dynastie in 2023. For someone who describes himself as "too shy, really reserved" before discovering comedy, the momentum feels improbable. But the work has been relentless: he started performing just a few years ago after catching the comedy bug at an open-mic night at ComedyWorks in Montreal.

His material draws from everyday life and people around him. "Quebecers make me laugh," he said. His mother appears frequently in his jokes — she's supportive but occasionally tells him he's sharing too much of her life. Family has anchored his early career: his aunt pushed him to listen to his recordings; his sister drove to Laval at the start to greet audience members at shows that weren't even full.

Sylvain says success came from discipline and resilience. "You don't make money and everything's kind of a mess, but for you it's crucial because you're learning to write jokes." Repeat audiences for the same material keep him going. "I don't even understand why," he laughed. "They're the same jokes."

His debut show, Juste Miben, is nearly complete — just a few details to polish before its official premiere. The rodeo crowds are giving him the feedback he needs to know what lands.
