Laval man charged with first-degree murder in death of 77-year-old partner

A 78-year-old Ronald Thibault has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his 77-year-old partner, Monique Thibault Poirier, in Laval's Chomedey sector.

Laval police were called to an apartment building on Jean-Béraud Street around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, after reports of two injured people. Thibault Poirier was pronounced dead at the scene. Thibault was found injured at the residence and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was charged Wednesday and appeared in court Wednesday as well.

Police are investigating whether the death could be classified as femicide. The case has been submitted to Quebec's Crown prosecutor's office. This is the second woman murdered in her home in less than a week in the Greater Montreal region—Leïla Ben Salem was found dead in a downtown Montreal apartment the previous Tuesday.
