Quebec's Crown prosecutor has stayed charges against 11 teenagers in Longueuil, halting their prosecution in a case tied to events preceding the death of 15-year-old Nooran Rezayi, who was fatally shot by Longueuil police in September 2025.

The teens faced charges including conspiracy to kidnap, conspiracy to commit unlawful confinement, conspiracy to commit assault, wearing a disguise for a criminal purpose, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and unlawful assembly. The prosecutor's office said it received new evidence after charges were filed that raised a complex legal issue. Legal proceedings are temporarily suspended and could be resumed within one year pending further analysis and consultations.

An investigation into the police shooting itself was launched by the Montreal police department. A separate police watchdog investigation into the actions of Longueuil police officers in the shooting remains ongoing, with findings still pending.

The stay of charges marks a significant development in a case that has drawn scrutiny over police response and the circumstances surrounding Rezayi's death. As HighOnCity reported in June, a Quebec investigation into Longueuil police actions in the incident was already underway following the fatal encounter.

What we asked

What specific new evidence prompted the prosecutor to stay charges, and does it relate to police actions or the teens' conduct?
