Cheerleading turns Verdun Auditorium into international arena for 1,300 elite athletes

More than 1,300 elite cheerleaders from over 10 countries have descended on Montreal's Verdun Auditorium for the Association for International All Star (AIA) Global Tournament, a first-time hosting for the city that marks both an international competition milestone and a recognition of Quebec's growing strength in the sport.

The tournament runs through July 20, with athletes competing at the highest levels of competitive cheerleading. The event reflects Montreal's pitch to international sports organizers: a city with infrastructure, expertise in event management, and a proven track record from hosting the 1976 Olympic Games, which the city is now marking its 50th anniversary of.

For 16-year-old Addison Fougere, a competitor from Nova Scotia, the tournament represents the culmination of months of preparation. "It's a really big opportunity for me and my team," she said. "We worked really hard this past season to get here and leading up to the competition. So it means a lot to have the chance to be here." Fougere has spent five years in cheerleading, a sport she credits with shaping her character and providing experiences she will carry forward.

Cheerleading continues to expand rapidly across Quebec. Cheer Québec now has more than 14,000 members across school and community programs, nearly 60 affiliated clubs, and about 30 annual competitions. Quebec athletes make up a significant portion of Canada's national teams and regularly contribute to the country's success at major international competitions.

Jenny-Lee Dugré, executive director of the Fédération de cheerleading du Québec, highlighted the significance of hosting in Montreal. "Cheer Québec is immensely proud to see that Tourisme Montréal is opening the city's doors to our athletes, enabling them to excel on the international stage in front of their loved ones, just as our city celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Olympic legacy."
