Emergency crews launched a search Friday evening near Verdun Beach after reports of a person missing in the water.

Firefighters, Montreal police, and the Canadian Coast Guard responded around 7:30 p.m. About 50 firefighters were on scene using rescue boats as the search continued into the night. Officials had no details on the missing person's identity as of the latest update.

The incident comes as Verdun borough recently launched a water safety campaign following three drowning deaths at the same location last summer. All three incidents occurred outside supervised hours and designated swimming areas.

Verdun Beach opens Saturday, June 13, and will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Aug. 30. The borough has added extra security guards alongside existing lifeguards after last year's deaths. Swimming is only permitted during supervised hours within designated areas.
