Montréal's Chinatown gets dedicated cleanup crew and long-term revitalization plan

Montréal's Chinatown is getting a dedicated cleaning crew and a long-term revitalization strategy. Beginning this week, a new brigade will work seven days a week for more than 10 hours daily, providing consistent upkeep of streets and public spaces in the historic neighbourhood.

The two-part initiative pairs immediate action with a broader Urban, Economic and Social Development Plan (PDUÉS) — a strategy meant to guide the neighbourhood's future while preserving its cultural identity. Claude Pinard, President of the Executive Committee and City Councillor for Saint-Jacques, said the city is "moving from words to action" after consultations held over several years with residents and community organizations.

"Chinatown deserves concrete action," Pinard said. "We are strengthening cleanliness in the area and launching an ambitious initiative that will allow us to collectively define the next steps for its future."

The city has not yet announced a timeline for completing the development plan, but work begins immediately as consultations with community partners continue. The enhanced cleaning program responds to priorities residents and local organizations identified during earlier rounds of community input.
