Montreal's streets are still buried under moving-day debris, and cleanup won't be finished for at least another week, Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada said Thursday.

Following July 1st moving day, residents left massive amounts of furniture and garbage at curbsides across the city. Martinez Ferrada urged people moving forward to donate unwanted items or take them to one of Montreal's seven ecocentres instead. "We can't just throw everything in the garbage," she said. The ecocentres accept furniture, appliances, construction materials, hazardous household waste like paint and batteries, and refrigeration equipment.

The city has assigned extra crews to some neighbourhoods and rented additional trucks from private companies because it doesn't have enough municipal equipment on hand. Martinez Ferrada blamed previous administrations for failing to invest in the infrastructure needed to support city services. "You can't hit a nail without a hammer," she said.
