Two Air Canada ground operations employees were arrested by the RCMP on Wednesday in connection with trafficking cocaine and cannabis through Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.
According to the RCMP investigation, the suspects allegedly participated in a scheme to "introduce and move luggage into secure areas of the airport to facilitate the importation of cocaine and the exportation of cannabis."
The investigation began in May after 62.5 kg of cocaine were intercepted in backpacks on a flight from Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. During the subsequent investigation, 56 kg of cannabis were also seized.
On Wednesday morning, RCMP officers conducted searches at two residences and a vehicle in the Greater Montreal area, as well as at the airline employees' base of operations in Dorval.
The arrested employees will be questioned and released while the investigation continues, the RCMP said. "Analysis of the evidence collected could lead to further arrests and charges," the force stated.
The RCMP has not disclosed the specific charges laid against the two employees or provided a file reference for the investigation.
