Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander was named the CFL's outstanding player Thursday, and teammate Tyson Philpot earned top Canadian honours. The Alouettes host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Saturday's division final, with the winner advancing to the Grey Cup on Nov. 15 in Calgary.

The two were tasked with surprising each other with the news during last Friday's team photo shoot. Philpot said he began to suspect something was up when Alexander was nowhere to be seen. "Me and him had goals coming into the season, so it's two out of three down," Philpot said.

Alexander led the CFL in completion percentage (72.1), touchdowns (35) and 30-plus yard completions (37), finishing second in passing with 5,257 yards. He is just the second Alouette to surpass 5,000 yards in a season, joining Anthony Calvillo. Voting was conducted by the Football Reporters of Canada, with Alexander taking 236 points to Philpot's 154. Edmonton's Cody Fajardo was third with 23 points.

Philpot set Canadian single-season records for catches (124) and receiving yards (1,809) in a career-high 16 games, and tied Tyler Snead with a league-leading 13 touchdown catches.

Montreal finished 14-4 and atop the East Division.
