Derek Lalonde is joining the Montreal Canadiens as an assistant coach, Sportsnet reported Wednesday, July 8.
Lalonde replaces Trevor Letowski, who has been with the Canadiens since 2021 and is stepping away to spend more time with his family. The team wants to keep Letowski involved with the organization in another capacity.
The hire comes one day after the Toronto Maple Leafs announced Lalonde would not return for the 2026-27 season. Lalonde joined Toronto's coaching staff last summer under head coach Craig Berube.
Before Toronto, Lalonde spent three seasons as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, posting an 89-86-23 record. He was previously an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2018 to 2022, where he helped the team win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.
