CAQ tables Bill 101 expansion for adult English education

Quebec has tabled an expansion of Bill 101 that would limit access to English-language adult education and vocational training to "historic anglos" only.

French Language Minister Jean-François Roberge introduced the legislation Thursday. When the idea was first announced in May, Roberge said the new regulations could affect as many as 27,000 students currently enrolled in English-language programs.

The move extends the Charter of the French language into a new domain — adult and vocational education — where English-language instruction has been available. Under the expansion, only residents who can demonstrate historic anglophone status would retain access to these programs in English.

The proposal has drawn attention from education advocates and language-rights groups, though the full scope of implementation remains unclear. The legislation is now in parliamentary process.
