Michel Moshe Mizrahi, a 68-year-old civilian killed in Monday's shooting in Côte-des-Neiges, is being remembered as a father of three with a heart for helping others.
Mizrahi, a member of Beth Chabad synagogue in Côte-St-Luc for more than 30 years, was shot while planning to meet his son for lunch. He died alongside police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane and the suspected shooter.
Rabbi Mendel Raskin of Beth Chabad described Mizrahi as deeply loved by his community. "He was such a great person, had a heart of gold. He was always here to help other people," Raskin said. The rabbi recounted how Mizrahi reportedly guided a woman with a baby to safety during the shooting, telling her to run. "If I'm alive today, it's because of him," the woman told Raskin.
Mizrahi, who owned a suit business, was known for the impact of his presence. "We should learn from his smile," Raskin said. "His smile was contagious. And people love to be around him."
An online fundraiser for Mizrahi's family raised more than $105,000 in its first day.
