Montreal held two funeral ceremonies Wednesday in memory of the police officer and civilian killed in Monday's shooting in Côte-des-Neiges, as the community began its mourning.
Michel Mizrahi, 68, a well-known member of Montreal's Jewish community, was remembered for his "immense generosity, his joy of life and the many ways in which he helped make the lives of others better." He was in the wrong place at the wrong time during the shooting.
Officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, who joined the Montreal Police Service in 2021, was honoured for his "sense of duty, his dedication and his professionalism." A funeral prayer was held Wednesday evening.
Beyond the two killed, a policewoman was seriously injured; her condition has stabilized in hospital. The suspected gunman, 25-year-old Seth Scott Hatfield from Lethbridge, Alberta, was shot dead by police after opening fire. According to media reports, Hatfield had written a manifesto before carrying out the attack.
The Sûreté du Québec is leading the criminal investigation while the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes examines the SPVM officers' response. Côte-des-Neiges' planned National Holiday celebrations were cancelled Wednesday to respect the grieving community.
