Canadian Denis Shapovalov withdrew from his first-round match Tuesday at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, retiring with an apparent groin injury sustained during play.
Shapovalov was down 3-0 in the third set against American Zachary Svajda when he retired. He had been visibly limping through the injury from the third set onwards. In the opening set, Shapovalov broke Svajda early and held his lead. But in the second set, an unforced error and a pair of double faults led to Svajda's second break, allowing the American to take the frame 6-4.
This marks the second consecutive first-round exit for Shapovalov at the National Bank Open. Last year, he also lost in the first round. Both times he arrived at the tournament coming off a finals appearance at the Mifel Tennis Open — he won that tournament in 2025 but lost this year on August 2.
