Jacques Doucet, the sports broadcaster who gave voice to Montreal's baseball history for 33 years as the play-by-play announcer for the Expos, died Thursday evening at 86.
Doucet began his broadcasting career in 1959 as a sports journalist at La Presse Canadienne and covered the Expos' debut in 1969 for La Presse newspaper. Starting in 1972, he became the full-time radio voice of Expos games, a role he held until the team moved to Washington at the end of the 2004 season. After the Expos' departure, he continued calling baseball on television for RDS and later TVA Sports.
In 1984, Rodger Brulotte was hired by CKAC to serve as colour commentator alongside Doucet — a partnership that shaped how generations of Quebec fans experienced the game. Brulotte, Doucet's longtime broadcasting partner, died on March 20 of this year.
Doucet's contributions to the sport were recognized with the Medal of Honor from the Quebec National Assembly in 2011. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020, a milestone honour for a man whose voice had become inseparable from Montreal's connection to baseball. Health issues forced him to retire in 2022. In 2024, he revealed he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
