Loto-Québec is modernizing how Quebecers buy lottery tickets. Beginning this summer, the crown corporation will introduce lottery ticket sales at self-service checkout stations in major retail chains including Maxi, Walmart, and Costco.
Customers will be able to purchase draw-based games like Lotto 6/49 or Lotto Max during checkout, with tickets printed directly on the same machine that produces receipts. The initiative follows years of testing and development — Loto-Québec first announced the project in 2022 and has already piloted the system at two Super C stores in Montérégie.
"The arrival and growing popularity of self-service checkouts has led us to look at modernizing our ways of operating to integrate our products into this new customer experience," said Renaud Dugas, spokesperson for Loto-Québec. Over the summer, the corporation will test the system with a few retailers before broader rollout.
Age-verification measures will continue to be mandatory to ensure buyers meet legal requirements. The new system will complement, not replace, the blue lottery terminals currently used in convenience stores, restaurants, and other retail locations.
The announcement comes as Loto-Québec reported record annual sales exceeding $3 billion for the first time, generating a dividend of $1.52 billion for the provincial government.
