McGill University retained its position as Canada's best university in the 2027 QS World University Rankings released Thursday, but the school's standing continues to slip globally. McGill landed 30th worldwide, down three spots from last year—a decline that reflects a decade-long downward drift.

In 2015, McGill ranked around 21st in the world. Despite holding the national top spot for the second consecutive year, the Montreal institution has struggled to maintain its position among the world's elite.

McGill's scorecard reveals where strength and weakness lie. The university scores exceptionally well on Academic Reputation (98.2), Employment Outcomes (98.3), Sustainability (97.9), Employer Reputation (95.9), and International Research Network (95.2). Two areas where the school lags significantly are Citations per Faculty (64.8) and Faculty Student Ratio (64.9)—metrics that carry substantial weight in the overall ranking.

Other Canadian universities also faced headwinds. The University of Toronto fell three spots to 32nd, and the University of British Columbia dropped five spots to 45th. Université de Montréal placed 162nd.

Canada as a whole is under pressure. The QS report noted that approximately 66 percent of ranked Canadian universities declined in this year's edition, a trend that signals systemic challenges in the country's higher-education competitiveness.
