Quebec's Housing Minister Karine Boivin Roy announced Saturday that construction of 1,650 new affordable housing units could begin in Montreal within the next year as part of eight projects selected under the Quebec Affordable Housing Program.
The projects are currently under federal review by Canada Homes for funding. Among them is a conversion of the former Molson factory site, which aims to create 374 homes, as well as a project in the Namur-Hippodrome district designed to build 477 homes. Other selected projects include Young Communia (423 units), Coulée Grou Phase 2 (220 units), GSQ-Connaught (101 units), Papineau (20 units), OBM Sicard (20 units), and a project on Gaspé Street (15 units).
The announcement was made at the Palais des congrès alongside representatives from the City of Montreal and the federal government. Federal Parliamentary Secretary Caroline Desrochers announced that three housing projects are already being funded under the first phase of the Canada Homes and Société d'habitation du Québec agreement announced last April. These three projects will allow for construction of 109 units.
Two of the three federally-funded projects can begin construction immediately: the Réseau habitation femmes Montréal's Éthel project in Verdun, which will create 20 housing units for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless, and the Société John Howard du Québec's project on Notre-Dame Street East, which aims to create 18 affordable housing units. A third approved project, Ricochet, aims to create emergency accommodation in Pierrefonds.
