Montreal is investing $540,000 to speed up renovations of 45 vacant housing units for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless, timed ahead of the city's annual July 1 moving day.

The funding, announced Friday, comes as Montreal grapples with a housing shortage and rising homelessness. Each unit will receive up to $12,000 for tailored repairs including painting, flooring, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, electrical and plumbing work, and window and door repairs.

"Just days before July 1, many Montrealers are anxious because they are searching for affordable housing," said Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada. "With this $540,000 investment, our administration is giving the SHDM the resources it needs to accelerate the renovation of 45 vacant housing units."

The renovations are being carried out by the Société d'habitation et de développement de Montréal (SHDM). The first apartments are expected to be available by the end of August 2026. Non-profit organizations partnering with the SHDM will manage leasing, maintenance, and support services aimed at helping tenants achieve long-term housing stability.

The 45 units will expand the SHDM's portfolio of approximately 700 housing units designated for vulnerable residents.
