After her café was robbed and vandalized three times in a year, Montreal café owner Claudia Gamboa is calling on the city to step in. She's asking Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada for more police resources and surveillance cameras at key intersections.

The first robbery happened in July. The second act of vandalism occurred in November when someone smashed the window. In June, thieves stole between $80 and $100 but caused roughly $2,000 in damage to the window and door, Gamboa said.

While Gamboa doesn't believe the café was specifically targeted, she says repeated break-ins and vandalism have become a growing problem for small businesses in the area. "I'm calling on her. Please make a small team on the police just to investigate these things," she said.

Mayor Martinez Ferrada acknowledged the challenges faced by merchants and residents in areas with a visible homeless community. She noted the city is juggling the need to make people feel safe while addressing what she called a humanitarian crisis of homelessness that "is gonna take some time" to resolve.
