A $134-million renovation of the Theatre Building at Place des Arts is underway, addressing advanced deterioration of the concrete cladding and corrosion to the structure.

The work will continue until summer 2028. The building houses Théâtre Maisonneuve, Théâtre Jean-Duceppe, and Salle Claude-Léveillée — three of Montreal's major theatrical venues. "Failing to act would have far more serious consequences for the integrity of the building and for public safety and would require protective systems and barricades to be installed around the Theatre Building and adjacent roadways — reducing mobility and the vitality of this key downtown area," said Marie-Josée Desrochers, president and CEO of Place des Arts.

Inspections since 2018 revealed the deterioration, prompting the major structural project. The iconic building was constructed in 1967 when Montreal hosted Expo 67.

Place des Arts said the construction work will have minimal impact on its summer programming, with only one hall closing for the duration of the renovation.
