Maison Théâtre will finally move into a permanent home in the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie neighbourhood after nine years of searching for a new space, with Monday's funding announcement unlocking a $45.5 million construction project at the Shops Angus site.
The theatre company has been renting its current home in the cégep du Vieux-Montréal since the early 1980s, but the college announced in 2017 it wanted to reclaim the lecture hall. Maison Théâtre spent years exploring other neighbourhoods — the Quartier des spectacles, the Latin Quarter — before settling on the Technopôle Angus location in the east end.
Funding includes $25 million from Quebec's Culture Ministry, $17.5 million from the federal government, $1 million from the City of Montréal, and $2 million from a capital campaign launched by the theatre itself. Construction begins in winter 2027, with opening scheduled for fall 2028.
The new building will include a 150-seat black box performance space and a replica of the current 400-seat main stage, allowing Maison Théâtre to expand its school programming and artist residencies while remaining rooted in its mission to serve young people and emerging artists. Director Sophie Labelle called the moment a relief after years of uncertainty: "We worked on three or four pretty serious projects over the last nine years. Now it's going to happen." Until the move, shows will continue at the current Saint-Hubert location.
