The Parti Québécois announced Thursday that prosecutor Marie-Claude Sarrazin will run for the party in the Montreal riding of Groulx, currently held by Finance Minister Eric Girard. Sarrazin gained public prominence for her work on the Gallant Commission, the public inquiry that examined the SAAQclic fiasco.
PQ Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said Sarrazin's experience made her an ideal candidate. "She's well known because she was a very important lawyer in the Gallant Commission that revealed incompetence and a lack of transparency in the SAAQclic scandal," he told reporters. Plamondon framed her candidacy as part of the party's pledge to end what he called waste of public funds under the Coalition Avenir Québec.
To run, Sarrazin will likely need to sell her shares in her law firm. Her legal partner is also entering politics but will run for the Quebec Liberal Party, according to the announcement.
