Construction is officially underway on a $159.9-million affordable housing project in Montréal's Saint-Michel neighbourhood.

Federal, provincial and municipal officials joined the Black Communities Housing Society on Friday for a ceremony marking the start of the Angélique-Latimer Complex, which will be built on Saint-Michel Boulevard.

The project will include 281 housing units, with 230 designated as affordable housing for families in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough. It will also feature community spaces and commercial areas. Up to 161 households could qualify for the Société d'habitation du Québec's Rent Supplement Program, meaning eligible tenants will spend no more than 25 per cent of their income on rent.

"This project reflects our government's commitment to increasing the supply of affordable housing and helping more families access safe, quality homes," said Quebec Housing Minister Karine Boivin Roy. "It is also a great example of what can be achieved when governments, municipalities, and community organizations work together."

The Black Communities Housing Society plans this as the first of several projects as it works toward creating 1,500 new housing units across Quebec by 2029.
