Robert Irving, a key executive at New Brunswick's J.D. Irving Ltd.—one of Canada's largest private companies spanning forestry, shipbuilding, and countless other ventures—died Tuesday at 71 following a cancer battle.

Irving, who served as co-CEO alongside his brother Jim, was a major figure in Atlantic Canada's business landscape for decades. The family released a statement saying he died surrounded by immediate family in Moncton. While the specific cancer type wasn't disclosed, the family announced last year that Irving had undergone successful surgery in July 2025 and was undergoing treatment.

Beyond the business headlines, Irving's death marks the passing of a generation in one of Canada's most influential family enterprises. J.D. Irving controls assets and operations across multiple sectors; succession planning in family empires this large is always a story with ripples.

For Canadians outside Atlantic Canada, the name Irving might register primarily through energy and forestry. But the Irving family's reach extends far deeper into Canadian infrastructure and commerce than most people realize.
