k.d. lang is being celebrated tonight at the National Arts Centre with a surprise tribute concert she has not seen in advance. The concert, titled "k.d. lang: has always been," runs tonight and coincides with an exhibition of the Canadian singer's stagewear.
Lang, born in Consort, Alberta, stands among Canada's most celebrated musicians. Her hits include "Constant Craving" and "Miss Chatelaine" from her 1992 album "Ingenue," and "Crying," a 1987 duet with Roy Orbison.
Performing tonight are Michael Bublé, Jann Arden, Allison Russell, Jane Siberry, Ron Sexmith, Jill Barber, Mariel Buckley, Wyatt C. Louis, and William Prince. Several have direct ties to lang's work. Siberry, whom lang inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame last year, sang with her on "Calling All Angels" and had two of her songs covered by lang on the 2004 album "Hymns of the 49th Parallel": "The Valley" and "Love is Everything." Sexmith is also featured on that same album.
