Abby Osterer didn't plan to run a bridal empire, but a Cricut machine and a marketplace gap changed her trajectory.
In 2019, Osterer was working in corporate marketing when she started exploring craft projects in her apartment. She noticed wedding products were bestsellers. By 2023, she'd launched Never Knew I Needed (NKIN), a consignment boutique selling sample dresses from boutiques across Canada.
The consignment model worked — but it came with a problem. "Brides would come in looking to say yes to the dress, but some would leave disappointed," Osterer said. Consignment shops are at the mercy of what designers send. The average woman in Ontario is a street-size 14, but most sample dresses arrive in bridal sizes 10 and 12. There was a severe shortage of plus sizes and smaller sizes.
When a unit across the street from her Carling Avenue location went up for lease, Osterer decided to move forward with Always Knew I Needed (AKIN), a made-to-order luxury bridal boutique, in 2025.
AKIN's core mission: carry two sample sizes for every dress so all brides can see themselves. Osterer also made a deliberate choice to stock only Canadian designers, a decision shaped by trade tensions with the U.S. She worked with designers to ensure dresses are both designed and sewn in Canada, with no size-limit restrictions and full customization available.
"Stocking two sample sizes for every dress is an accessible approach but an expensive one," Osterer acknowledged. The investment reflects her conviction that bridal shopping should welcome everyone — not just those who fit the traditional size six sample.
It's a reminder that sometimes the best business solutions come from listening to what customers actually need.
