The NAC Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Shelley, performs Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in C minor, "Resurrection," tonight at 8 p.m. EDT as a free livestream.
The epic work brought the film Maestro — Bradley Cooper's 2023 biopic of Leonard Bernstein — to its ecstatic conclusion. These concerts mark the NAC Orchestra's first-ever performance of Mahler's soul-stirring "Resurrection" Symphony.
Shelley, one of the foremost conductors of his generation, is described by critics as "a natural communicator, both on and off the podium" with conducting technique that is "immaculate, everything crystal clear." The 2025–2026 season marks Shelley's 11th and final season as Music Director of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra. In 2024, he was named the third Music Director of the Pacific Symphony in Orange County, California, beginning in the 2026–2027 season.
The performance features members of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and NACO Mentorship Program participants. The livestream is available at the NAC website.
