Electrical explosion forces closure of multiple Kanata businesses for months

A malfunctioning electrical transformer in a Kanata strip mall has forced at least three businesses to close for months, leaving staff jobless and owners scrambling to cover losses their insurance may not fully absorb.

The blast happened around 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, at 767 Silver Seven Road when an electrical vault exploded with enough force to shake the walls of nearby units. Two employees at Moo & Bean Café, a Vietnamese specialty coffee shop that had been open four months, heard the bang first. Fire investigators later found the storefront of Bob's Rehab, an acupuncture and massage clinic next door, blown out. Sprinkler water flooded into Moo & Bean; the dividing wall between the two businesses became unstable, on the verge of falling. Strawberry Blonde Bakery's Kanata location, known for gluten-free baked goods, announced closure until further notice.

Fire officials estimate $1 million in damage. No injuries were reported. Ottawa Fire Service classified the blast as preventable but said the precise reason for the transformer failure remains under investigation by the Electrical Safety Authority. Both Ottawa Hydro and Enbridge shut off power and gas to all businesses in the building as a precaution.

For Moo & Bean owner Chi Blondin, the immediate crisis is her staff. "If the café is closed for five, six, or whatever months, then my staff are also out of work for that amount of time," she said. "Everybody has bills to pay, so I'm trying to see how much my insurance covers and how much I can support them." The operators of Bob's Rehab declined to comment but confirmed major renovations lie ahead. Repairs could stretch well into next year.
