Kanata South will have its first new councillor since 2010 after Erin Coffin defeated incumbent Allan Hubley in the only incumbent upset of Ottawa's municipal election on Monday night.
Coffin, a senior policy adviser at Health Canada, took 49.69 per cent of the vote to Hubley's 32.49 per cent. Of 16,001 ballots cast in the west-end ward, Coffin received 7,878 and Hubley 5,248, on a turnout of 38.83 per cent. Megan Strazds-Esenbergs took 7.78 per cent and Sam Bhalesar 9.76 per cent.
Hubley was first elected in 2010 and served four terms. It was Coffin's second attempt to unseat him. She lives in the ward and has been in the community since 1990.
Her campaign was based at Gabriel Pizza in Kanata, where supporters cheered as the results came in. Campaign manager John Roach said residents were ready for a change, and that Hubley had done good work during his 16 years in office.
Hubley held a private election party for supporters and his campaign team, and did not respond to a request for comment before press time.
Coffin said she wants the community to "thrive" and to be "part of the solution." She plans to rest for a few days before starting work. "We've got four years to get some business done," she said.
