Illegal after-hours business in Nepean raided, 125 evacuated over fire safety violations

Ottawa Fire Service led a multi-agency operation September 19, that evacuated 125 people from an illegal after-hours business in Nepean after community complaints raised safety concerns.

The raid at 100 Bentley Avenue involved Ottawa Police frontline patrol, neighbourhood resource and RIDE program officers, as well as the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and city bylaw enforcement. A search warrant was executed and alcohol was seized as part of the investigation. One person has been charged with obstruction of justice. Fire officials documented numerous fire safety violations at the property and remain investigating the circumstances. Property owners were notified of the violations.

"Ultimately, this is about more than compliance. It is about preventing tragedy before it occurs," the Ottawa Fire Service said in a statement. Ottawa Police and Fire Services emphasized that "illegal after-hours establishments can present community safety risks" and said both agencies "remain focused on identifying and disrupting these types of operations and will continue to take enforcement action where appropriate."

Community members are being asked to report any illegal after-hours businesses or other safety concerns to local authorities.
