The Rideau Hall Foundation has raised more than $100,000 in donations since Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a public fundraiser and design competition to restore 24 Sussex, the former official residence of the Prime Minister.
The foundation received more than 200 online donations averaging $257 each over the weekend following the Friday announcement. Campaign pledges have added a further $50,000 to the total.
Rideau Hall Foundation CEO Teresa Marques said the group is "humbled and moved" by the influx of contributions from individual Canadians. The foundation is accepting donations in accordance with its established policies, which reject corporate and anonymous donations and require donors to attest to their residency status.
While the renovation does not yet have a specific budget, the cap for donations has been set at $5 million — representing 10 per cent of the $50 million overall goal for the restoration project.
