Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to announce the government's plan to restore 24 Sussex, the 35-room mansion built in 1896 that was abandoned as the official Ottawa residence of the prime minister in 2015.

Taxpayers have been funding tens of thousands of dollars per year to maintain the vacant property. Heritage Ottawa says the building should be maintained, renewed, and kept in public hands, though it remains unclear whether it will be restored for public use or as the official prime ministerial residence.

Katherine Spencer-Ross, president of Heritage Ottawa, called the restoration plan "great news" but stressed the building's long history of political involvement. She says it should remain the official residence.
