Hundreds of soccer fans gathered at Lansdowne Park on Wednesday, June 24 to watch a pivotal World Cup match between Canada and Switzerland broadcast from Vancouver, but the Canadian supporters went home disappointed.
Canada fell behind 2-0 and couldn't equalize, suffering a 2-1 loss that left the team in second place behind Switzerland at the end of Group B play. The Natural Watch Party on the big screen at Lansdowne was one of several fan gatherings held across the country that day.
Ruebén Vargas opened the scoring in the 46th minute, and Johan Manzambi extended the Swiss lead in the 57th before Promise David scored Canada's lone goal in the 76th minute.
As a result of the loss, the Canadian side will travel to Los Angeles for its first knockout-round game on Sunday instead of enjoying home-pitch advantage for that stage of the tournament.
