The National Capital Commission board approved the final interior design for the Centre Block renovation on Tuesday, advancing Canada's largest heritage rehabilitation project toward construction.

The welcome centre will be housed in a deep underground pit on Parliament Hill, featuring limestone wall paneling, terrazzo floors, and a skylight framing views of the Peace Tower. The design also includes enclosed east and west "light courts" flanking the House of Commons and Senate chambers, preserving natural light throughout the restored building.

The $4.5–5 billion project (before taxes) will restore crumbling stonework, earthquake-proof the building, remove asbestos, and replace outdated mechanical and electrical systems. Main construction is expected to wrap between 2030 and 2031.

"The design approach taken conserves the heritage value and character-defining attributes of the Centre Block, while responding to contemporary requirements," said Jason Hutchison, chief of federal design approvals at the NCC, presenting renderings to board members.

The Federal Heritage Review Office was generally supportive of the overall approach, particularly the emphasis on preserving natural light. The approval clears a major hurdle after concept images were revealed in late September and as the NCC continues work on related infrastructure projects including a new bridge over the Ottawa River and redevelopment of federal properties at Confederation Heights.
