Claude Giroux is staying with the Senators for his 19th NHL season after re-signing on July 7 to a one-year, $2 million contract.

The 38-year-old forward said family was the decisive factor in his decision to remain in Ottawa rather than explore offers from the Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Montreal Canadiens.

"When you've got three boys, it's not just about me anymore," Giroux said Tuesday, speaking with local media on Zoom. "We just had to talk it over and make sure that we were doing the right thing here."

Giroux acknowledged he evaluated options for his family during negotiations with general manager Steve Staios, but ultimately the organization and his relationships with teammates and coaches won out. "I love the organization. I love my teammates, the coaching staff, everybody that's involved. I've been here for four years now, and we just create those relationships," he said.

Last season, Giroux had 49 points (14 goals, 35 assists) in 82 games. While he may see time in the bottom six rather than on the top trio with Tim Stutzle, Giroux said he's ready to adapt to whatever role makes the team strongest.
