Provincial police responded to Highway 416 around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday after a southbound vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes and struck an oncoming car. Both drivers suffered minor injuries, though the front end of the SUV was badly damaged.
The driver of the SUV had fallen asleep at the wheel. They were charged with careless driving, which brings a $490 fine and six demerit points upon conviction.
Officers reminded drivers that roadways present hazards beyond other vehicles. "We have seen tires coming off vehicles, ladders falling off trucks, and even pedestrians crossing the highway," officials said.
In early May, police responded to an incident on Highway 417 after a tire came loose from a vehicle travelling eastbound, bounced into the westbound lanes, and struck another vehicle. The struck driver suffered significant injuries. Police charged the driver whose tire fell off under the Highway Traffic Act.
