All lanes of Highway 417 will reopen as early as Monday, June 22, according to a memo from Richard Holder, director of the Rail Construction Program for the Transit Services Department.
Work to construct signage foundations in the median near the Pinecrest/Greenbank Road overpass has made "good progress" and is five weeks ahead of the original schedule, the memo said Saturday, June 13. To meet the June 22 target, the highway will be reduced to one lane overnight on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21—weather dependent.
Mayor Mark Sutcliffe called the update "very good news." "I know how frustrating it's been for drivers in the west end due to lane closures and construction," Sutcliffe wrote. "I asked for the project to be significantly accelerated so we could reduce disruption and get relief for commuters as quickly as possible."
The city plans signage, social-media alerts, and a public service announcement to promote awareness of the overnight impacts. The Ministry of Transportation is overseeing the signage foundation work on behalf of the province.
