Sections of Highway 417 and 416 around Ottawa now carry 110 km/h speed limits as of August 21, marking the latest phase of Ontario's expansion of higher speed limits across its provincial highway network.

The changes affect multiple segments: Highway 416 from Fallowfield to County Road 12; Highway 417 from the 416 split to Highway 7 through Ottawa's west neighbourhoods including Ashton, Stittsville, Kanata and Bells Corners; and Highway 7 to Appleton Side Road. In the east end, Highway 417 from Leitrim Road also saw the increase.

The move builds on earlier expansions in 2022 and 2024, which followed a multi-year pilot project showing select highways could safely accommodate higher speeds. The government has repeatedly argued that the increases are "evidence-based" and bring Ontario in line with other provinces such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia, where 110 km/h is standard.

Drivers should watch for new speed limit signage along affected routes.
