Ontario is raising speed limits from 100 km/h to 110 km/h on most provincial highways, including key routes through Ottawa, starting Friday, June 26 and rolling out through September 2026.
All of the 416 in the city will get the increase. On the 417, the change applies to sections between the 416 interchange and Highway 7, and between Leitrim Road and Regional Road 174. The stretch between the 416 and the 174 stays at 100 km/h.
The province says the move follows successful speed increases in 2022 and 2024 on other highways. Once fully implemented across Ontario, 938 kilometres of provincial highways will have the new 110 km/h limit — a 43 per cent jump from today's posted speeds. The province claims drivers traveling from Toronto to Ottawa could save nearly half an hour on the road; those from Sarnia to Toronto could save about 20 minutes.
Highways are only getting the increase if they've been designed to safely handle higher speeds, according to the province.
