A Toronto family on vacation was pulled over in Ottawa after an officer caught their rental vehicle travelling well over the speed limit on Highway 417 over the weekend.
Police clocked the vehicle travelling at 178 km/h near Kanata Avenue in the west end. The driver faces an immediate 30-day licence suspension, and the rental vehicle is impounded for two weeks. They are facing a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving ban if convicted.
The stop comes as Ontario Provincial Police have ramped up enforcement on Highway 417 and rural roadways. Officers from the Russell County Detachment have pulled over 40 drivers for stunt driving in one month, according to OPP.
Officials gave examples of egregious incidents they have encountered, including a driver clocked going 91 km/h in a 40 km/h zone during school hours. Other incidents include drivers going 60 and 50 km/h over the limit in a 60 km/h zone, and speeds of 191 km/h and 179 km/h on Highway 417.
