A 20-year-old driver is facing criminal charges after provincial police clocked a vehicle travelling 188 km/h on Highway 417 around 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 16.
The driver has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Upon conviction, they face a minimum $2,000 fine, a 14-day vehicle impound, six demerit points, and a one-year driving prohibition.
The charge reflects a September agreement between the Crown in Ottawa and provincial police. Under the deal, officers can lay dangerous driving charges for any speeds exceeding 180 km/h — a tactic aimed at curbing high-profile speeding incidents in the capital.
